In the summer of 1944, Tree and Warren Morse decided to buy a house. They had been renting for 10 years at a Menemsha cottage called “the Lobster Pot” and now they were looking for one of their own. They saw a home with outstanding views of Menemsha Harbor, perched high on a rolling hill . The day after they saw it, they bought it and moved into what would soon become the Beach Plum Inn, known for decades for its good food and warm hospitality.
In 1969, the Inn fell into the hands of their daughter Carol, and her husband, Fred Feiner. Carol and Fred operated the Beach Plum with the same continuing love of people and delighting many with wonderful food, music and the best water view of any restaurant on the Vineyard. The Vineyard experience involved catching the freshest fish, picking berries and growing the freshest vegetables, all of which found their way to the Inn guest’s meals, as the early days of Farm to Table living. For 15 years they delighted everyone who came, and helped many realize the Vineyard experience.
Carol Feiner decided, in 1979, to get her broker’s license and open Feiner Real Estate. So many of her Inn guests had fallen in love with the Vineyard and wanted to buy a home. Carol wanted to stay connected with the guests, and impart her knowledge of the Island, and particularly of Chilmark. Carol loved to show property and land. And as an early riser, she had a knack for finding the freshest ripe berries which grow throughout the Island. She could be found picking beach plums at a special Aquinnah spot, and she had her special places for blueberries and blackberries in Chilmark. When she returned to the Inn, those berries would find their way into the guest’s freshly made breakfasts. Just as Fred Feiner’s freshest fish catch would be served up for dinner. They felt their customers deserved the very best that they could provide, at the Inn, at the table and at the Real Estate office.
Jim Feiner grew up in this environment, and carries forth the same ideals of fine local living, good business and love of the Vineyard, as the principal of Feiner Real Estate today.
